Key Takeaways

  • Space Saving Hanging Plants They can be a great option for when you have limited desk or floor space.

  • Consider hanging plant maintenance - They can be harder to reach than usual and so harder to water and if needed, re-pot!

  • Lack of light - This can typically be a real challenge to overcome. There is less light up high, and so potentially less food for your plant.

The benefits of hanging plants

Now that you know real plants (unlike replica plants...) can play a powerful role in purifying the air in your space, you might be considering adding more greenery. But what if you simply don’t have the floor space to spare?

That’s where hanging plants come in! They're a superb way to get the most greenery for your space, whilst maintaining your floorspace.

Whether in an office, hospitality venue, or even at home, hanging plants are a clever way to introduce low-maintenance indoor greenery that not only looks fantastic but also works hard for your environment

The challenges with indoor hanging plants

While hanging plants look amazing, and can be practical from a space-saving point of view, they do come with challenges.

Placed high up and often in darker corners, they can struggle with low light (Learn more about low light planting here). Their height also makes watering, pruning, and pest checks trickier, while air conditioning units (often placed in higher up places), can put stress on species that are used to more tropical temperatures!

Here we have combined replica hanging plants with a live planting scheme.

Our Plant Plan hanging plant favourites

While hanging plants can be a little tricky at times (and occasionally our designers recommend replica planting instead), we here at the Plan office can't help but adore them; the way they look, and how they elevate a space.

With that in mind, here are our five favourite hanging plants, along with their standout benefits and some handy tips for how best to look after them!

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) – the easy-care classic

The Spider Plant is one of the most reliable and low-maintenance office plants. Famous for its air-purifying qualities, it thrives in a wide range of environments and is tolerant of lower light levels.

Top tip: Spider Plants love a little humidity. Bathrooms and communal kitchen spaces are perfect, as the extra moisture encourages them to produce their signature runners.

Plant Plan call-out: We’ve found Spider Plants particularly effective in suspended planters across the corporate spaces we manage.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) – the hardy fast-grower

Pothos is a hardy, fast-growing plant that adapts well to different conditions, making it a favourite in busy workplaces. With its lush trailing vines, it adds instant green décor, softening sharp edges and bringing a cosy, welcoming feel

Top tip: Go easy on the watering! Let the soil dry out before watering again. Your Pothos will definitely thank you with healthier, happier growth.

Pothos (Devil's Ivy)

Mistletoe cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera) – the unique sculptural plant

Rhipsalis is a striking trailing plant with slender, cascading stems that create a soft, textured look. Unlike many succulents, it actually prefers indirect light and a touch more humidity, which makes it particularly well-suited to indoor office environments.

Top tip: Place Rhipsalis somewhere with consistent light and occasional misting. It’s ideal for suspended planters or shelving where its cascading form can really shine.

Plant Plan call-out: We often incorporate Rhipsalis into contemporary office designs, where its sculptural style brings a modern yet organic touch.

String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) – a fragile beauty

Few plants are as instantly recognisable as the String of Pearls, with its cascading beads that look like they’ve been strung together by nature itself. This South African succulent is a true show-stopper, but it does need a little more care than the average office plant.

Top tip: String of Pearls loves bright, indirect light and only needs watering when the soil is completely dry. Think “less is more” when it comes to water.

In commercial spaces, we usually recommend these plants where they can receive consistent light and be cared for by professionals. That way, they keep their dramatic looks without becoming high-maintenance.

Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) – the office favourite

This classic trailing plant with lush, heart-shaped leaves is a timeless choice for both homes and workplaces. Its cascading growth is perfect for softening interiors and introducing a strong biophilic design element.

Top tip: Keep it in medium light and water lightly once the top of the soil feels dry. It’s one of the easiest indoor plants to grow, making it perfect for beginners.

Overcoming hanging plant challenges with expert help

As gorgeous as they are, hanging plants can sometimes be a little demanding. Hung high up, they don’t always get the light they need and can be harder to water, prune, or check for pests. Ceiling-level air conditioning units can also make life tough for them.

The good news? With a little planning, these challenges are easy to tackle. Pick the right spot, ensure planters are easy to reach, and give your greenery the right amount of light, and you’ll have happy, thriving plants.

And if you’d rather leave the care to the experts, many of our clients choose Plant Plan’s maintenance services. With regular visits to handle watering, feeding, and plant health checks, your displays will always look their absolute best!

Conclusion

Hanging plants bring a unique combination of beauty, biophilic design, and wellbeing benefits into offices, hospitality, and retail interiors. But to truly thrive, they need the right plant selection, positioning, and ongoing care.
