Founded by entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, flight story sits right at the centre of the new media storm. So, naturally, its workplace needed to feel every bit as ambitious as the people forging the new frontier of our world inside inside it.
This is an office filled with personality, creativity and more than a few surprises (there’s a rocket lying around, for starters).
The planting needed to match that energy. Huge structural plants, statement indoor trees and greenery woven throughout the workspace create a bold, forward-thinking planting scheme for a seriously forward-thinking company.
Designed by Sheila Bird Studio, the Flight Story office is built around one central idea: flight.
Set across three floors of a former Victorian warehouse, the design embraces the building’s industrial bones. Exposed brick and raw architectural features contrast futuristic technology, space-age details and some seriously unexpected features (including that 25-foot rocket).
Planting plays an important role in bringing those two worlds together. Lush greenery and huge structural plants soften the harder industrial elements, while adding warmth, texture and life throughout the building.
The result is a fascinating contrast: part Victorian warehouse, part spaceship, part garden. A forward-thinking workplace that feels very much like Flight Story.
When the brief is part Victorian warehouse, part spaceship, standard office planting probably isn’t going to cut it.
The scale and personality of the Flight Story workspace called for planting that could hold its own. High ceilings, exposed structure and huge open spaces can quickly dwarf conventional office planting.
So we went big.
Statement indoor trees and huge structural plants like giant Schefflera, and Strelitzia draw greenery upwards into the architecture, giving the planting enough visual weight to sit alongside exposed brickwork, industrial features and, of course, a 25-foot rocket.
Large specimens introduce height and structure, softening the harder lines of the former warehouse, while layers of greenery bring texture, warmth and life throughout the workspace.
Flight Story wanted a workplace that reflected the culture and ambition of the company inside it. The finished space certainly does that.
The planting softens the building without taking away from its character. Huge plants stand confidently within the architecture, while greenery brings warmth and life to spaces designed around creativity, collaboration and performance. It is bold, slightly unexpected and impossible to mistake for just another office.
Which feels very Flight Story.
