The new year is kicking off!
It is a time for new growth. For restarting and resetting. Perhaps it is even a time for trying new things...
If you have ever considered bringing plants into your office, whether it is a home study or a shared workspace, now is the time to start!
Office plants have been shown to support cleaner air, improved focus, better wellbeing, and more enjoyable working environments, making them a simple but powerful addition to your space.
Today, we are going to be exploring our favourite beginner-friendly office plants, covering where to put them, how to look after them, and what you can expect them to give back to you (beyond the HUGE sense of joy you feel every time you look at them...).
These are office plants that do not require expert maintenance or a large budget. Plants well known for surviving and thriving over the long term, even in busy, bustling workplaces.
Our easy, low-maintenance office favourites list is a great start, but it is not exhaustive! Which is why we would like to preemptively cover some of the general rules that separate office-friendly plants from houseplants (ones that might do better in a typical home setting).
Light requirements are different for residential spaces and offices (excluding home offices). Whilst most rooms in a house will typically see a strong, plant-friendly amount of natural light, the same is often not true of office spaces.
This means that, to be easily maintained, office plants need to be tolerant of far lower light levels, including artificial lighting.
If plants are placed in busy working environments, they are far less likely to be watered regularly. If a species is tolerant of less frequent watering, it will be quite happy with this arrangement. Forgetfulness, after all, is part of office life...
Plants grow at very different speeds. If a species is too eager, it may quickly outgrow its pot, or even the space it inhabits. This can lead to more frequent pruning, repotting, and general maintenance, so a slow-growing species is a must for offices.
An office is a busy place. People are constantly coming and going, turning the temperature up and down, and, crucially, occasionally bumping into plants.
The hardier the plant, the better. If it is used to windy, rough, or variable environments, even better. It will have no trouble getting used to life in your office!

So, what plants best meet the needs outlined above?
To help you get started, we are going to take a look at some of our tried and tested office favourites. These are plants that are forgiving, adaptable, and well suited to the realities of working life. We use these in our office planting schemes across a whole range of working environments - so we know they work!
Why it works well in offices
The snake plant is often considered the ultimate beginner office plant, and for good reason. It is extremely resilient, coping well with inconsistent care, fluctuating temperatures, and low light levels. Its upright leaves create a clean, architectural look that suits modern office interiors particularly well. We have one on our Plant Plan lunch table!
Light and watering basics
Snake plants tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from bright indirect light to low light and artificial lighting. Watering should be infrequent. Allow the soil to dry out fully between waterings, as overwatering is the only real risk.
Why it works well in offices
The ZZ plant is ideal for offices with limited natural light. Its thick, glossy leaves store water, making it highly drought tolerant. It maintains a consistently neat appearance and grows slowly, so no pruning required (or at least not much)
Light and watering basics
ZZ plants thrive in low to medium light and perform well under artificial lighting. Water sparingly, always allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Why it works well in offices
Pothos is a versatile and forgiving plant that adds softness and movement to office interiors. It grows faster than many office plants but remains easy to control. Its trailing foliage brings warmth and life to spaces that might otherwise feel a little sterile.
Light and watering basics
Pothos prefers bright indirect light but adapts well to lower light conditions. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry. It is very forgiving if the odd watering is missed.
Pothos also work great as hanging plants, than can trail down shelves!

Why it works well in offices
Peace lilies are popular with first time buyers because they offer both lush greenery and seasonal flowers.
Light and watering basics
Peace lilies prefer medium to low light and should be watered regularly, keeping the soil lightly moist. They tolerate artificial lighting well but should not be placed in direct sunlight.
Why it works well in offices
Dracaena varieties are reliable, adaptable, and visually impactful. Their upright growth habit makes them ideal for filling empty spaces without creating clutter. Many varieties are particularly well suited to typical office conditions.
Light and watering basics
Dracaena prefers bright indirect light but adapts well to lower light levels. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Buying plants for the first time can feel intimidating. After all, you are choosing to care for another living thing, and nobody wants to feel responsible for a shrivelled plant, looking limp in the corner of the office...
These concerns are completely normal! In fact, they are the most common reasons businesses delay or avoid investing in office plants altogether. Below, we have addressed some of the questions and worries we hear time and time again.
No! Many of the best plants for offices are selected specifically because they thrive on minimal attention.
The plants featured in this guide are forgiving, resilient, and well suited to real working environments. Occasional missed waterings or fluctuating conditions will not cause problems, and in many cases, less intervention actually leads to better results.
Yes. Low light offices are far more common than people realise. Fortunately, many popular office plants naturally grow in shaded environments and perform well under artificial lighting.
By choosing species that tolerate lower light levels, it is entirely possible to maintain healthy, attractive office plants even in spaces without large windows or strong natural light.
When plants struggle in offices, it is usually because the wrong species have been placed in the wrong environment. Office-appropriate plants are chosen for their tidy growth, resilience, and consistent appearance.
So if the right choices are made from the offset then this ought not to be something that you ever have to worry about!
Office planting does not need to be costly or complex. Starting with a small number of well chosen, low maintenance office plants is often more effective and more economical than trying to introduce too much greenery at once.
Low maintenance plants reduce ongoing costs, limit the time required for care, and provide long term value rather than short term decoration.
Taken together, these frequently asked questions are exactly why this guide exists. Office plants can be simple to care for, affordable to introduce, and genuinely enjoyable to live with.
Bringing plants into your office does not need to be complicated, risky, or expensive. With the right choices, even first time buyers can create greener, calmer, and more inviting workspaces that continue to perform well over time.
If the new year is about fresh starts and small positive changes, office plants are an easy place to begin. Start small, choose well, and let the plants do what they do best.
