Claims into the benefits of plants backed up by studies - 20/10/2011

While it is common knowledge that plants are good for us the actual benefits of having plants around us at work and at home have always been hard to quantify.

However, several institutions have studied the concept and have all come out with incredible statistics about the benefits of having plants in your premises.  Some of the stats are listed below and they make for interesting reading.

  • Dr. Tjove Fjeld of the Agricultural University in Oslo, Norway conducted a 2 year study in an office which found that plants led to a significant reduction in ailments after plants were introduced.  More specifically, complaints regarding fatigue, headaches, sore throats, coughs, and dry facial skin recorded a 23% reduction.  This translated into a 14% reduction in absenteeism.
  • Dr. Virginia Lohr of Washington State University in the USA found that staff working in the presence of office plants were 12% more productive and also less stressed than those that were working in areas that had no plants in them.
  • A hospital study showed that absence from work due to illness could be reduced by 10% within 6 months with the use of plants.  By using plants positioned near to workers computer screens days lost to sickness were reduced from 15% to 5% within 6 months.

By using plants to help improve our indoor climates dramatic cost savings can be achieved.  The relatively low costs of having professionally maintained interior planting can be more than offset by the benefits to staff health and morale.  To learn more about the benefits that interior planting can give you and your company give us a call on 0800 279 3120 and we will be glad to arrange an appointment to identify the best use of plants within your premises.
